Event-terrace - Structural Design E01

In my first exercise in structural design, the task was to design a construction out of wooden pillows and thin threads, that would allow the roof-terrace of the HIL-building to be covered with spots and speakers. Some areas had to stay clear of threads, pillows, speakers or spots to a heigth of 2.5 meters.

We span a net of intersecting threads across the platform, on each crosssection supporting one spot, secured against horizontal movement. Another passive thread beneatch each active thread secures the nuts against vertical movement. The modell is scaled 1:50, spots are represented by nuts, speakers by washers. There were 10 spots and 5 speakers to evenly distribute. We arranged 2 speakers at each corner of the greater areas and one in the mid of the smaller one. The spots were allocated as evenly as possible.
Not so clear concept of intersecting active and passive
threads
Clear scetch of the distribution of spots (dots) and speakers (crosses)
The supporting wooden pillows could not be nailed to the baseplate and had to be suspended by threads too. It was quite a frustrating work, because every new thread I knoted to the existing structure another one became loose again and there were a lot of threads to knot. There are some more pictures of the finishid modell:
